Can a Nurse Practitioner Do Pediatric House Calls in Illinois?
Yes. In Illinois, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with Full Practice Authority can diagnose, treat, and prescribe independently including during an in-home visit at your home. No physician co-signature required. No referral needed. The same clinical authority a pediatrician carries in an office, exercised at your kitchen table.
ShaTara Coleman, FNP-BC, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with Full Practice Authority in Illinois and 18 additional states. She sees children ages 3 to 19 through Little Steps Pediatric House Calls, serving families across Oak Park, Chicago, and the west suburbs seven days a week.
What Full Practice Authority Means for Your Child
Full Practice Authority is granted by the state of Illinois and is the highest level of independent practice authority available to nurse practitioners. It means ShaTara can examine your child, make a diagnosis, prescribe medication when clinically appropriate, order laboratory testing, and provide a complete clinical assessment without any additional oversight.
This is not a telehealth only service. She comes to your home, performs a hands-on physical exam, and explains exactly what is happening and what to watch for.
What Gets Treated on a House Call
Ear infections, strep throat, upper respiratory infections, pink eye, rashes and skin concerns, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, flu symptoms, minor wounds, and more. Well-child exams, sports physicals, and return-to-school notes are also available.
Insurance and Availability
Little Steps accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, select Illinois Medicaid plans, and self-pay. HSA and FSA are accepted. Home visits are available seven days a week from 7am to 8pm. Telehealth is available until 11pm.
